Minnesota Schools of Character & Promising Practices Awards

OVERVIEW
Synergy & Leadership Exchange (Synergy) sponsors the State Schools of Character (SSOC) program in partnership with Character.org. Minnesota is one of 30 states offering the SSOC program as a part of Character.org’s prestigious Schools of Character program. The program recognizes all schools and districts that demonstrate an exemplary level of implementation of Character.org’s Eleven Principles of Character Education.

The National and State Schools of Character programs are a school improvement process which offers the opportunity for self-assessment and expert feedback to schools and districts engaged in character education. Minnesota applicants reaching a standard of excellence at the state level are named State Schools of Character (for 3 years) by Synergy and those meeting a national standard of excellence are named National Schools of Character (for 5 years) by Character.org. These schools and districts become part of a state and national network that serve as models and mentors to other educators.

The Minnesota Schools of Character (MNSOC) awards program has been in existence since 2008 and recognizes schools and/or districts that excel in exemplifying the eleven principles and demonstrate outstanding character education initiatives that yield positive results in student behavior, school climate, and academic performance. Participation in the state or national Schools of Character program utilizes the same online application, available on Character.org’s website and due in early December each year. All public and private K-12 schools and districts are eligible to apply.

As part of the MNSOC program, Synergy also presents Promising Practices awards. The awards recognize successful, unique ways of reinforcing character traits in PreK-12 students. Practices must be in keeping with the eleven principles. Schools or youth serving organizations may apply for state and/or national recognition for their Promising Practices.

Synergy & Leadership Exchange recognized the 2014 Minnesota Schools of Character and Promising Practice honorees at the Character Recognition Awards celebration May 8 at the Minnesota State capitol. View event information and photos.

National Schools of Character and Promising Practice honorees are recognized by Character.org at the fall national character education forum.
